Benchmark Soils Project technical report 4Soils of 16 research sites in the University of Hawaii's agricultural research station network are described in detail. The sites are on the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii. Soil series in the soil orders Mollisols, Oxisols, Vertisols, Inceptisols, Ultisols, Histisols, and Entisols are described. Soil maps of the stations are shown. Tables provide a soil profile description and laboratory data for the predominant soil series at each site, the text discusses the characteristics of the soil types within the series, along with their capability classifications, and related soils or variants at the sites are described

Understorey plant community and light availability in conifer plantations and natural hardwood forests in Taiwan

Questions: What are the effects of replacing mixed species natural forests with Cryptomeria japonica plantations on understorey plant functional and species diversity? What is the role of the understorey light environment in determining understorey diversity and community in the two types of forest? Location: Subtropical northeast Taiwan. Methods: We examined light environments using hemispherical photography, and diversity and composition of understorey plants of a 35‐yr C. japonica plantation and an adjacent natural hardwood forest. Results: Understorey plant species richness was similar in the two forests, but the communities were different; only 18 of the 91 recorded understorey plant species occurred in both forests. Relative abundance of plants among different functional groups differed between the two forests. Relative numbers of shade‐tolerant and shade‐intolerant seedling individuals were also different between the two forest types with only one shade‐intolerant seedling in the plantation compared to 23 seedlings belonging to two species in the natural forest. In the natural forest 11 species of tree seedling were found, while in the plantation only five were found, and the seedling density was only one third of that in the natural forest. Across plots in both forests, understorey plant richness and diversity were negatively correlated with direct sunlight but not indirect sunlight, possibly because direct light plays a more important role in understorey plant growth. Conclusions: We report lower species and functional diversity and higher light availability in a natural hardwood forest than an adjacent 30‐yr C. japonica plantation, possibly due to the increased dominance of shade‐intolerant species associated with higher light availability. To maintain plant diversity, management efforts must be made to prevent localized losses of shade‐adapted understorey plants

Urothelial Inverted Papilloma of the Lower Urinary Tract—A Benign Lesion or a Precursor of Malignancy?

ObjectiveWe investigated the clinical characteristics and follow-up results of patients with a lower urinary tract inverted papilloma (IP) in our hospital, with the intention of clarifying whether certain groups require more aggressive surveillance.Materials and MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study of lower urinary tract IP, using the pathology database of Taipei Veterans General Hospital, from September 1992 to February 2008. In total, 67 patients were enrolled. Patients' clinical characteristics, symptoms, tumor locations, and follow-up data were analyzed.ResultsAmong the 67 patients diagnosed with IP, 59 were male and eight were female, with a mean age of 67.9 ± 12.4 years. Gross hematuria and lower-urinary-tract symptoms were the most common symptoms. All of the patients received transurethral resection as initial treatment. Thirty-eight of these patients were monitored for a median of 21 months (range: 3–168 months). Seven patients had synchronous urothelial malignancies, and one had recurrent IP during follow-up. No patient had subsequent urothelial carcinoma or IP recurrence without a synchronous or previous urothelial malignancy during follow-up.ConclusionThere is a low incidence of developing a subsequent malignancy with a simple IP lesion during follow-up. Rigorous surveillance may be unnecessary in IP patients without a synchronous or previous urothelial malignancy

Applicability of perturbative QCD to ΛbΛc\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c decays

We develop perturbative QCD factorization theorem for the semileptonic heavy baryon decay ΛbΛclνˉ\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c l\bar{\nu}, whose form factors are expressed as the convolutions of hard bb quark decay amplitudes with universal Λb\Lambda_b and Λc\Lambda_c baryon wave functions. Large logarithmic corrections are organized to all orders by the Sudakov resummation, which renders perturbative expansions more reliable. It is observed that perturbative QCD is applicable to ΛbΛc\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c decays for velocity transfer greater than 1.2. Under requirement of heavy quark symmetry, we predict the branching ratio B(ΛbΛclνˉ)2B(\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c l{\bar\nu})\sim 2%, and determine the Λb\Lambda_b and Λc\Lambda_c baryon wave functions.Comment: 12 pages in Latex file, 3 figures in postscript files, some results are changed, but the conclusion is the sam

Essential role of PKC delta in histone deacetylase inhibitor-induced Epstein-Barr virus reactivation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells

Histone deactylase inhibitors (HDACi) are common chemotherapeutic agents that stimulate Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation; the detailed mechanism remains obscure. In this study, it is demonstrated that PKC delta is required for induction of the EBV lytic cycle by HDACi. Inhibition of PKC delta abrogates HDACi-mediated transcriptional activation of the Zta promoter and downstream lytic gene expression. Nuclear translocation of PKC delta is observed following HDACi stimulation and its overexpression leads to progression of the EBV lytic cycle. Our study suggests that PKC delta is a crucial mediator of EBV reactivation and provides a novel insight to study the regulation of the EBV lytic cycle

The fermi arc and fermi pocket in cuprates in a short-range diagonal stripe phase

In this paper we studied the fermi arc and the fermi pocket in cuprates in a short-range diagonal stripe phase with wave vectors (7π/8,7π/8)(7\pi/8, 7\pi/8), which reproduce with a high accuracy the positions and sizes of the fermi arc and fermi pocket and the superstructure in cuprates observed by Meng et al\cite{Meng}. The low-energy spectral function indicates that the fermi pocket results from the main band and the shadow band at the fermi energy. Above the fermi energy the shadow band gradually departs away from the main band, leaving a fermi arc. Thus we conclude that the fermi arc and fermi pocket can be fully attributed to the stripe phase but has nothing to do with pairing. Incorporating a d-wave pairing potential in the stripe phase the spectral weight in the antinodal region is removed, leaving a clean fermi pocket in the nodal region.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Morphology of the archaellar motor and associated cytoplasmic cone in Thermococcus kodakaraensis

Archaeal swimming motility is driven by archaella: rotary motors attached to long extracellular filaments. The structure of these motors, and particularly how they are anchored in the absence of a peptidoglycan cell wall, is unknown. Here, we use electron cryotomography to visualize the archaellar basal body in vivo in Thermococcus kodakaraensis KOD1. Compared to the homologous bacterial type IV pilus (T4P), we observe structural similarities as well as several unique features. While the position of the cytoplasmic ATPase appears conserved, it is not braced by linkages that extend upward through the cell envelope as in the T4P, but rather by cytoplasmic components that attach it to a large conical frustum up to 500 nm in diameter at its base. In addition to anchoring the lophotrichous bundle of archaella, the conical frustum associates with chemosensory arrays and ribosome‐excluding material and may function as a polar organizing center for the coccoid cells

On 1st July 2017, rabies outbreak was declared in the state of Sarawak, which is located in the Borneo Island following the deaths of 3 children due to human rabies infection. Rabies has the highest case fatality rate but is highly preventable through prompt and effective post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
